1. National State of the Birds Report Released - Yesterday, the Department of Interior released "The State of the Birds - United States of America 2009" report.
Here are some of the report's findings:
First some good news.
Wetlands: Although many wetland birds show troubling declines, conservation programs have protected millions of acres and contributed to thriving populations of hunted waterfowl, herons, egrets and other birds. Lesser Scaup, Northern Pintail and several sea ducks are showing troubling declines, but most geese are increasing dramatically and many ducks have held steady.
Waterfowl: On the whole 39 species of hunted waterfowl have increased by more than 100% during the past 40 years.
Some Troubling News
Oceans: At least 39% of U.S. birds restricted to ocean habitats are declining and almost half are of conservation concern, indicating deteriorating ocean conditions.
Coasts: Half of all migrating shorebirds have declined, indicating stress in coastal habitats besieged by development, disturbance and dwindling food supplies.
Forests: Representing eastern, western, boreal, and subtropical forests, the forest birds indicator dropped by roughly 10% from 1968 through increased slightly. In eastern forests, the indicator dropped by nearly 25%.

2. Huntsville and Auburn Fastest Growing Cities in 2008 - According to the Birmingham News, two Alabama metro areas, made the Census Bureau's list of the fastest-growing metro areas from 2007 to 2008. The metro areas were Huntsville (ranked 27th) and Auburn -Opelika (ranked 54th).
The Birmingham-Hoover metro remains Alabama's largest population center increasing 6.3% since 2000 to reach 1,117,608 people. The region is the 48th largest metro area in the U.S.
Other interesting figures of note: Limestone County was the fastest growing county with a 3.1% increase, followed by Shelby, Madison, St. Clair, Coffee, Lee, Blount, Baldwin, Houston and Franklin counties. Statewide, Alabama has increased its population from 4,447,355 in 2000 to 4,661,900 in 2008.

4. Autauga County's Bluebird Trail - In last week's Montgomery Advertiser, a wonderful story was written about a great movement occurring in Autauga County - the creation of the Autauga Bluebird Trail.
According to the Advertiser, in the spring of 2006, 14 bluebird nest boxes were placed along Alabama 14 in Autauga County. This year, the nesting boxes have spread into Elmore and Coosa counties for a total of 225 boxes aimed at increasing the number of eastern bluebirds. Local high students at Stanhope Elmore and Wetumpka high schools will be monitoring the boxes.
The goal of the group? Create an Alabama bluebird trail following Alabama 14 as it crosses the state from Georgia to Mississippi. Check out their efforts at http://www.autaugabluebirdtrail.com

Bill Ireland
One of Bill's greatest achievements was his tireless effort to pass the Forever Wild Constitutional Amendment - a law that has saved over 180,000 acres of land in Alabama. Throughout the years - every time I met with Bill, he smiled widely and shook my hand vigorously as in celebration of that great law. It was like he was saying to me, even more than a decade later - "We did it! We did it!

Dr. Dan Holliman
Alabama lost a very special teacher, biologist, conservationist and friend last week with the passing of Dr. Dan Holliman. One of the founding members of the Alabama Conservancy, Dr. Holliman conducted some of the biological studies that led to the creation of the Sipsey Wilderness. We will miss his gracious spirit but we will celebrate and carry on everyday the life and gifts he shared while he was among us.

1. Two Alabama Mussels Possibly Extinct ... The Global Importance of Alabama Mussels - Last week, it was reported in the Birmingham News that the US Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed listing two mussel species native to Alabama as extinct. The two mussels that are candidates for extinction are the Upland Combshell and the Southern Acornshell. Each species were found in the Coosa and Cahaba rivers, but have not been found since the early 1970s.
Check out the following "Mussel Facts" from the Birmingham News that describe the global importance of Alabama's mussels and our unique riverine system. From the News:
* Alabama historically was home to 60% of U.S. freshwater mussels.
* Alabama's native mussel species make up about 26% of all freshwater mussels found globally.
* 180 freshwater mussel species historically occurring in Alabama
* 137 mussel species remain in Alabama
* 41 endangered mussel species listed in Alabama
* 28 Alabama mussel species are believed to have become extinct in the past century.
* 15 species have disappeared from Alabama waters but still are found elsewhere
2. Study: 370,000 Acres of Coastal Wetlands Lost Between 1998-2004 - According to a new study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration nearly 370,000 acres of coastal wetlands were lost along the Gulf of Mexico between 1998 to 2004. The study, which included coastal salt marshes, concluded that development in the Gulf region, especially in Mississippi and Alabama appeared to be the most at risk.
In an interview with the Mobile Register, one of the study's authors Susan-Marie Steadman stated, "I was not surprised we were losing wetlands along the Gulf. I was surprised we were losing 60,000 acres per year."
Steadman said it was well documented that Louisiana was losing 20,000 acres of coastal wetlands per year, but no one expected the rest of the Gulf Coast to be losing an additional 40,000 acres annually, the Register reported.
3. Freshwater Land Trust Becomes First Accredited Land Trust in Alabama - Last week, the Freshwater Land Trust, a nonprofit land conservation group in Alabama was awarded accredited status by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance. The new status earned by the Freshwater Land Trust make it the first land trust in Alabama to be accredited and one of only 53 nationally.
Founded in 1997, the Freshwater Land Trust works throughout the Greater Birmingham area to acquire and care for lands that enhance water quality and open space. The organization has preserved more than 5000 acres, including Red Mountain Park in Birmingham, the Turkey Creek Nature Preserve in Pinson, and the homewood Forest Preserve.
